Review: Cool Hand Luke at The Aldwych Theatre

Written by Sarah Magee 01 / 10 / 2011

If you like easy mid-week viewing then this is the show for you! Charting the rise and fall of Luke Simpson, a rather disillusioned young man, the musical sees him battle his moral demons.

Cool Hand Luke

Gospel tunes segment the scenes which serve as a great device, adding rural American tone and depth to the production. I am always impressed when actors have hidden talents and Marc Warren, who plays Luke doesn’t disappoint:  he cracks out a few great tunes on both the harmonica and banjo.

It was unfortunate that on the night a couple of audience members had left their mobile phones on. I think we should hand them in on entry as it really does spoil the illusion – you can almost feel the actors wince and lose some of their flair.

In conclusion Cool Hand Luke is by no means a flawless production but it isn’t far off…
